Ex-president of India buys Steven Richter Photo
Pilgrims on the ghat in Benares
Steven Richter’s photograph of sunrise worshippers at a ghat, the steps leading down to the sacred Ganges River in Benares was bought last night by the former president of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Hindu pilgrim come to this holiest of cities, now known as Varanasi, to wash away their sins in the Ganges waters. It is also considered an auspicious place to die. Dr. Kalam officially opened the Indo-American Arts Council’s group exhibition, “Through the Eyes of Others: Photographs of India” in the Indian Consulate ballroom.
The show remains open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m through May 3 at 3 East 64th Street just east of Fifth Avenue. Richter, our Road Food Warrior is Our Insatiable photographer. Here are his works from the show.
