Young healthy food moguls ready their first Manhattan outlet of Sweetgreen next door to NoMad
Sweetgreen’s farm-to-table moguls are Jonathan Neman, Nicolas Jammet and Nathaniel Ru.
Sweetgreen, the beyond-virtuous, community-minded, organic, farm-to-table salad shop from Washington D.C. is deep in construction of its first Manhattan unit, on Broadway next door to NoMad. At 2500 sq.ft. it will be the fast-casual chain’s biggest unit. The owners hope to open by the end of June, or early in July.
In fact, partner Nicolas Jammet has asked his mother Rita to postpone an overseas trip to be there for the opening. The Jammet parents were the last owners of La Caravelle before it closed. Mom Rita represents Caravelle Champagne.
Jammet, with Georgetown pals Nathaniel Ru and Jonathan Neman, opened the first 560 sq. ft Sweetgreen in Georgetown in August 2007 at the age of 21 because they had tired of the hunt for good, clean meals around the school. They now have 16 units in Washington, D.C., Maryland, Philadelphia, and Virginia, each featuring a list of local farm sources, a strict devotion to green, and “the latest and greatest music tracks.”
In addition to salads, Sweetgreen also offers seasonal soups, frozen yogurt, and fresh pressed juices (sweetpress), featuring local and organic ingredients, and a mission to promote the Sweet Life. The company is committed to plant-based compostable packaging, reclaimed construction materials and furniture, LED and fluorescent lights, and eco-friendly paints and wall coverings.
To celebrate the opening of their second location in 2010, they invited their favorite bands to play in a parking lot behind the Dupont store. That gathering of 500 friends and fans has grown into an annual music festival where they promote healthy living, the green way of life, and an eclectic roster of artists.
Twenty thousand attendees are expected at the 4th annual Sweetlife music and food festival on Saturday, May 11, at the Merriweather Post Pavillion in Columbia, MD. In the food lineup are chefs and food trucks from D.C. plus a Sweetgreen popup restaurant and kiosks. Tickets can be purchased at TicketFly.com.
